1989 - Kwai Chung Container Freight Station at Berth No 3 - Phase I & II (HK$400m) |
| A 6-storey high R.C. flat slab
structure with a ramp. The structure is used for storages
of containers. 40m long container vehicles can travel to
every floor to down load their goods. Design imposed load
for every floor is 17kPa. Average span between columns is
approximately 11m. However, the maximum span is 16m. In
terms of concrete volume used, the building is the most
massive reinforced concrete structure in the South East
Asia when it was completed. We were retained by the client as the structural consultant to check the design of the bored pile foundation of the Phase I structure when it was constructed up to the 4/F and excessive settlement of the bored pile foundation was detected. Alarm was raised as this would cause severe distress to the already constructed flat slabs which might lead to a catastrophic failure. Remedial measures were designed by our office which finally stabilized the situation. We were later retained by the client to take over the R.S.E. position. Then we became the R.S.E. of Phase II as well. The structure of this project was completed in 1989. |
